Twenty Ten

5 hours before twenty 10 ends and 20 eleven begins.Lets see what happened

twenty ten to me was:

Being free from the clutches of schooland enclosed in a bigger place, the world

Time to recover and improve myself
20-o-nine didnt end as well as i would have hoped, so it gave me great incentive to begin the last year with great hope.

Learning to understand the realities
your not david archuleta, frank lampard or barney stinson
yet, just because we're not as handsome, strong or funny as they are, it does not mean that we will never be handsome, strong or funny. it's all the matter looking at things at a different way.

The opportunity to get to know myself better
Like in the movie Dead Poets Society, Robbie Williams says "Men live lives of quiet desperation". "The longer we wait to find what we want, the less likely we are to find it in the first place". Its amazing how much you can learn about yourself in 6-7 months. You discover hidden talents, hidden interests, hidden feelings too (haha)

Lessons of 2010

1. We are not as weak as we think we are
If you want anything in life, you have to man up and get it.You can't expect anything if you just say it and don't take action.Don't be afraid to take risks and make a fool of yourself. The worst failure is not to try at all.The human mind can do anything, the question is do you have the heart to do it

2.Change is a constant
The world constantly keeps changing. Life also changes the same way.We have to be flexible enough to adapt to the situation, yet at the same time, while adapting, we should not lose the real essence of who we are.

twnty 11 shall be:

a chance to become a better man

more time to explore my thoughts

an opportunity to learn

a chance to correct my past mistakes

the opportunity to get closer to everyone

just live

I hope this works out :)

Happy New Year Everyone !

Principle #1

Principles are rules, rules that you live, sleep and possibly die with

In business, they are known as ethics and are used to determine decisions made by companies

So today id like to talk about some of my own principles. some beliefs, some observations and some lessons

1. dont keep anger. it slows and keeps you down

to make it simple. i went through 5 or 6 interviews and i didnt get any scholarships. my dad was to put it kindly kept berating me endlessly on why you didnt get this, why did he or she get that, whats wrong with you and all the normal things parent say to their children after the child disappoints their parents. looking back i think i knew what i may have done wrong, but to be fair parents shouldnt be doing that to their child. when you know you failed, it isnt going to help, to tell me that i failed (pointing the obvious isnt it). so i was really angry with my dad about this for quite some time. this shattered my self belief and confidence

nearing the end of 5 months in college, doing a lot better than what i expected. i braved myself to confront my parents. i was not going to let them talk bull and i was tired of that thought reverberating in my head.it made me angry and i felt that in no way is it acceptable that i should hate my own parents. i prepared counter arguments and as many sarcastic comments i could think off. i felt really mad at the time

In the end though i didnt need them. my dad pulled a 360 . i know my dad long enough to know he is iron fisted in his beliefs and keeps it that way, but then this time he blew me away.to make it short, he APOLOGIZED for what he said before and admitted he was WRONG before this. All that hatred for some reason changed to respect and admiration. He was not done just yet though, this statement completely changed how i thought of my parents

"Its okay to disagree with us, you should do what you think is best for you"

"We will always support you no matter what, we'll always have your back and we will never disown you"

"never keep emotions inside, let it out, especially between people you love"

by the end of the car ride( we went for dinner in subang that time and they were sending me back to casa). i gained this new found respect and love for my parents

After that I was like me again . We even stopped by at the mamak near Summit and talked for a few hours about my life in Taylors. It felt like having not parents but friends that i could talk too and relate.

My mom said this to me as a response to studying
" Don't force (yourself to study), do something because you love it"

by this time

i was free
free of everything i had before
free of all the beliefs i had about life and parents
free of the stereotypes and hatred
as free as a bird !

I felt happy again

Thanks Mom and Dad :)

you guys still annoy me sometimes, but hey thats your job
and i guess id not have it any other way :)

Rules Don't Stop Me

My my what a year has this been

the brackets are afterthoughts after writing this :D

Exactly one year ago today, someone and something changed my life.I could still feel how i felt how that day was for me
"i cant believe im growing up"
"im invincible"
" IM AWESOME ! "
Thinking about it today, i feel like rolling on the floor !

it was a first date :D

on the day, before i went out, i was listening to fireflies by owl city.for some reason, the general happy tone of the song really reinforced my belief that today last year was going to be a good day.

How Wrong Was That ! haha

Put it down to just being too blind to read signs.i probably couldn't tell between a pencil and a plane for my life in this message decoding thing. to be honest (it was nothing at all pun)
i was still new at this love thing to be honest
Was it just a fixation, crush, puppy love or something ?
If we had Relationships and Dating 101 in school, i bet i would have known the difference and (with effort and studying like hell) I could have scored at least 98% for that paper. HAHA

Anyway,i couldn't really put my tongue on why i did have this crush on her
She was and still is now an excellent conversationalist
It was fun just talking about random stuff all day
It felt like having someone that i could talk too ( very important)
Without any sort of judgment i guess
the connection was there

Maybe that was why

Anyway, to tell you about how the date went, would be like to tell you whether or not that dude really sodomized that other unfortunate dude so lets not talk about that. HAHA.
put it this way i finally understand why Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman sang that song 'and then i go an spoil it all like saying something stupid like i love you ! '. Dont do it !!!! especially on the first date !!!!!
( best mistake of my life :D ) hahaha

That was the first and the last time we went out.i realized the mistake (and basically thought of a million and one solutions to the problem but to no avail) i made and shortly after...

It became hell. i screwed up i guess. For some reason, my confidence, self belief, and RM 100
(or was it RM 50 i forgot how much money i spent on the date.HAHAHA) were gone.Coming from a guy which lived in hell (boarding school) for 2 years, this was an achievement somewhat. Sleeping at 3 am could not compare to this sort of feeling. I mean you felt like shit sleeping at 3 am, but with this you felt like shit and you lost rm 100 which = more shit.

I went into a state of mental delusion
What is this ? What does this all mean ? blah blah blah
I felt like going crazy really, you just lose everything in yourself so you have no direction in your life anymore.
Generally, from TV and movies, when this happens a person would
a)retreat in his shell
b)develop a Bush like hatred for women everywhere

They basically run off from the world, feeling that they might be scarred again by people

But for some reason, i did the opposite thing
i ran to the world
for some reason i had a sudden urge to run. so i went jogging pretty much most of the time to forget this. little did i know, it actually made it worse.you couldnt stop running without the thought of how you failed in your head.it eventually came to the point where the pain and fatigue was unbearable. my train of thought was along the lines of

'why should i complain about this, they're more unfortunate people out there that have worse problems than i do'
at this point, i remembered this talk we had in school about cancer patients and their lives.

enter MAKNA, the Malaysian Cancer Society,
ironically when i was there i found my makna (meaning) as well. once you see the people there, you begin to realize how lucky you really are and how thankful you should be. these people have no chance of moving forward in life, while you do.Therefore, dont waste your life thinking about stupid stuff and do something amazing. at least, these people would not be in vain.

realizing this, i tried to get out of my comfort zone and volunteer for petrosains. Petrosains was a scary thought for me, while we were there, we had to deal with everyone from customers to management who are all not exactly the carebear type.
nevertheless, i came, i saw, i made lots of new friends.it was what i needed, interaction with lots of people and lots of things to do.

as an added plan, i made a promise to myself that i would finish reading Dale Carnegie's How to Make Friends and Influence People so that i would never again make the same mistakes again (never did really ! haha)
Personally i did feel somewhat crazy and insane reading the book
" who reads self help ? only psychos and serial killers do"
till i found it actually did help me in a way. for some reason, i feel more at ease with people. it was a lot easier to have a conversation and explain things to people.

Then, I went to Taylors
keep it short and simple. met lots of good friends.applied what i learned in the 5 months while i was free. learned an uncountable number of things for the past 6 months. it helped in a lot of things. A LOT

IN THE END,

looking now a year ahead, it was possibly the best thing i've ever done in my life !
no shit !
sometimes we are a bit too shortsighted to see the impacts and benefits of things in its entirety.sometimes it takes a kick in the balls or kick in the behind for us to realize how short life really is !
I feel changed, i feel different, i feel happy and accomplished :)
i managed to overcome my own stereotypes and was able to make good of my mistake. I learned something ( many things actually)!

so my friends, you know who you are !
Thank You for all the experiences and guidance you have given to me
Thanks for the support and calls too !

and a big thanks to that someone who was so totally cool about the whole thing.

It feels like a movie, it was unexpected, surprising and unbeliveable.

My 2010 movie
a MAKNA volunteer
a PETROSAINS volunteer
KL Standard Chartered Marathon 10km finisher :)
TAYLORS COLLEGE, CPU
ZOO NEGARA Volunteer and Organizer :D
went to a lot of parties
met many amazing friends
became closer to friends and family
licensed to drive
CHELSEA winning the BPL !!!
the list goes on really

couldnt have written it any better i think :)

My final words are

A mistake may mean the end of something, but it may also mean the start of something better and new !
We just have to learn from them !

1st Sem Post Mortem

I can't help but notice how fast this year has been. I remembered as if it was a few days ago since i registered in Casa and now, ive pretty much found all the good eats here. Dora does it again !

In a more serious light, this post is intended for reflection purposes so that i wont forget the mistakes and accomplishments i made.I feel really weird writing accomplishments in a reflection related post but i realized one thing about living is that not everything is bad , not everything is good. There is always a balance in between, so I have to make sure it reflects that perspective

My first semester in CPU in short has been exhilirating and stressful. In fact, ive never been this stressed before. Adapting from Malaysian education to a Canadian education is a bit tricky at first, but all in all, i think i prefer this system over the blackboard and chalk method.

What I like the most about CPU is firstly, how accesible my teachers are and how open the system is. We dont learn a 100% from the textbook, we learn primarily through our friends, internet and our own inquiry.Teachers do a good job of teaching, but to excel students have to go the extra mile in search of that thing called understanding and application.Just knowing what economies of scale is not good enough, there must be an application of knowledge to make the meaning more clearly defined. As a result, students become more confident in their understanding.

The teachers here are in my opinion completely different to the teachers ive had previously. My particular English teacher is exceptional, not because of his good english and his presentations. I consider him exceptional because he for one, does not feed us with everything, he instead teaches us to become independent and do things ourselves. He merely gives us tools and guides which as a result has made me a more resourceful student. Previously before, i honestly would say story books are boring compared to factual books like Freakonomics and other books. However, after this semester, i stand corrected, if anything, story books teach you more about human nature, life than a psychology/ economics or factual book ever will with its difficult terminologies. It also teaches you to become more of an analyst than a memorizer. Books will always have their direct and indirect messages, this semester was the first time i was exposed to thesis writing which is supposed to encourage students to uncover that indirect message. As a result the students become more critical and analytical in terms of assesing information which is an important tool in the working world today.

Getting into the thick of things

Things that have to be addressed

a.Time management
CPU is a time consuming programme, not because of its exams or quizzes, but its due to the fact that we have quite a large number of assignments to complete in a short amount of time.It really gets hectic during the final few weeks of the semester when all the independent study units are due. An ISU is basically our own research project where we will apply what we learn in class, in real-life. Its a great way to test how well a student understands the subject because it makes the student make links between the text and the real world.ISU's require a great deal of time to complete and if done in groups requires lots of communication and teamwork. In the process of doing some of my ISU's i cant help but notice certain periods where i either a) lost motivation to work or b) felt lazy and wrote crap on paper . One thing about CPU is that it teaches you consistency so any sort of inconsistency might affect your final mark. Therefore, i shall have to:
1.Stay positive and imagine
JUSTIN BIEBER !
HELL NO !
ELLEN PAGE
HELL YEAH !!!! XD
basically anything that makes me pumped to go to canada

2.In group work, clear lines of communication must be established
Team talks on a regular basis
Establish the goal objective and solution

3.Work Smart
Effort is important but efficiency is paramount to doing well here. Since time is a precious resource, the less time you take to do something without jeopardizing quality, the more time you have to focus on other things.

b.Maximizing study time
Consider this. Next semester, i'll have 5 classes daily (Core+LAN).This sem i had 4, with 2 breaks in between . Lots of time to relax and finish work. Next sem, im expecting 3 classes straight with no break. Then, i have 4 hours of additional classes. 5 or 6 including IELTS. So i will deduce that next sem will be 3 times as hectic as before. Ill be expecting to go back to CASA possibly around 5 or 630 everyday which leaves me with only 1 or 2 hours of free time and the remaining hours to study. Therefore, maximizing and optimizing study time will be important. The problem with this is mainly that room mates are mostly guys from other courses so we all learn different things. The next best solution would be to start my own study group.

c. Planning
Like football, sometimes the game is won or lost from tactics. Ergo, planning is very important in getting good marks for presentations or ISU.Some general planning guidelines would be
1.Work as a team
2.Break work into pieces, its less intimidating that way
3.Concepts and Main ideas must be made clear before branches are introduced
4.Team meetings weekly and assign a day to catch up or complete assignments
5.Secretaries or people with notebooks are very important
6.Everyone is responsible for their own work.
7.However, that does not mean everyman for himself, it means everyone must work with each other closely to get the best possible outcome (synergy)

d.Procrastination and letting things slide
If there was one thing that i felt could have been improved, it was this. I remember once i had done considerably well for this subject, i felt as if i could take my gas of the pedal and just take it lackadaisically . How wrong was I ! As soon as i did, the marks and the work quality went down quite considerably. This was further worsened by the fact that
1. I did not take advantage and ask my teacher for clarification on certain topics
2. I sat at the back of the class which i believe was the least conducive place to learn a subject which requires high precision and accuracy
It was only when i discovered this problem, i started to change my habits, i sat in front and started to become more vocal in class. By that time however, the damage was done. For what happened though, im quite pleased with the response i got after i changed those 2 things. It was not as high as before but it met my expectations which was good enough for me

All in all, i learned quite a lot this semester.I honestly hope with all the experience i accumulated this semester, hopefully next semester will not be as hard. This was just an academic perspective. On an emotional and social perspective, i could write an 8 page report on that. But that will be for me to analyze and for you to think about
